Who's Minding the Store or Shouldn't Government Officials Have to Resign to Run for Another Office?

The following is an idea I have been contemplating:

ANY public official who runs for another office should have to resign his or her present paid public position. WE THE PEOPLE are their bosses and we are paying them handsomely for their "service" to the public; $169,000 per year plus benefits for rank and file congress-people.

Would my boss allow me to leave the job, run for public office (or try to become an actor or a fan dancer), draw my full salary and come back unpunished when I fail? Absurd!

Neither should congress-people (and other sitting officials) who set out to capture new offices. I resent seeing them being paid out of my pocket and running all over the country when they should be in Washington doing their jobs. Or is it really true they spend very little time there?

The present presidential campaign started particularly early and it was obvious to me that the potential candidates did NOT have their minds on the business of governance.

I find this offensive.

If sitting government officials were required to resign when running for new offices, it might make potential candidates think twice and thrice before giving up "a bird in the hand for two in the bush."
