Happy Mother's Day

My mother, Irma Fuentes Cuza de Brinton, has always been a woman ahead of her time.

In Cuba when girls were getting married soon after their 16-year-old coming out party, my Mom insisted she wanted to go to university to be a doctor.

Her father said it was not proper for a girl and unless she chose another discipline she would have to figure out how to pay for it herself. She opted for pharmacy and went to La Universidad de La Habana (the University of Havana.)

After she and my U.S. Navy officer doctor Dad married and came to the States, she went to USC School of Pharmacy and practiced in California for 30 years.

She is a world traveler and speaks five (5) languages.

She has always been there for her three kids, of which I am the eldest, and the one that gave her the most trouble.

Tan fiel y tan gentil fue él, en todo, hasta el fin
Hijo, amigo, hermano, y siempre gran papá
Y muy pero muy querido de Cruzita, su mamá
Como esposo…fue tierno y tan seguro
Palma y Fermin…un amor fiel y puro
Abuelo querido, bisabuelo y tío
Qué dichosa fuí… que fue el mío!
Entre familia, él siempre fue un modelo
Y hací para nosotros, un gran consuelo
Un hombre humilde y un buen trabajador,
Nunca faltando en su ancho amor
Entre palabras dulces y sabiduría
Nos brindó su paz y su alegría
Con una vista de luz interior
Veía entre nosotros lo bueno y lo major
Sus palabras suaves de un buen consejo
Su vida un ejemplo…un gran espejo
Deberremos ver con sus ojos y su fé
Siguiendo en su camino, como él siempre fue
La vida es tan fragil, pero aun es tan linda
Entre la risa y el llanto y todo lo que brinda
Hay dolor y tristeza en la perdida de Fermin
Pero el profundo sufrimiento tendrá, tal vez, su fin
Porque en esta vida, hay los dulce recuerdos
De la familia toda unida y los momentos tiernos
Nos ayuda con el valor de luchar y sobrevivir
Nos enseña entre los bosques el camino, por cuál seguir
